Review #9: Fonte Coffee Roaster

Name of Roaster: Fonte Coffee Roaster Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Seattle, WA Name of Roast: Myanmar Blue Mountain Estate Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Medium/Dark Origin of Beans: Mandalay, Myanmar Price: $22 (12 oz) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): Chemex Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): Seven Days Aroma: Opening the bag, we were hit with a variety of scents reminiscent of dark chocolate brownie, smoke, Oreo cookie biscuit, bark, and cedar. A few beans were completely blackened and had to be discarded, and those may have given rise to the smoke notes. The grind revealed chocolate and kindling. On the pour, we noted a bittersweet smell resembling a blend of honeysuckle and dark chocolate. Flavor Profile: The first note that hit us was the roast flavor high on the palate, but below the roast, the sip also had an undercurrent of slight sweetness. Deep chocolate and wood notes crossed the palate next, followed by a grassy note that lingered on the front end of the tongue; perhaps lemongrass. On the back end, lasting aromatics were found of pine and cedar. There was a medium weight to the brew, and it was very center of mouth focused. Overall Impression (What did you think of it? Anything else we should know?): We found this coffee surprising and exotic. Of the coffees we have reviewed thus far, this one had by far this biggest bloom. The notes of kindling and cedar were unexpected and very interesting and challenging to discern. Sipping this coffee sent our minds to memories of walking in dense forests over crushed moss and leaves as a heavy fog was lifting. We paired this with hazelnut granola to balance out the heavy wood notes. Our only issue was the few charred beans we had to remove, but hope that our bag was an outlier. If you’re looking for a change of pace from berry-focused, lighter roasts, this offering is a solid option. Final Score (1-10, with 10 being the best cup of coffee in your life): 7.5.
