Review #24: Sunergos Coffee

Name of Roaster: Sunergos Coffee

Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Louisville, KY

Name of Roast: Ethiopia Hambela

Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Medium Origin of Beans: Guji, Alaka District, Oromia Region, Ethiopia Price: $11 (8 oz.) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): Chemex Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): Ten Days

Aroma: Opening the bag, we noted chocolate chip cookie, chocolate cake, and strawberry jam. On the grind, scents of fresh baked bread, graham, and cocoa appeared. The pour revealed honey, dark chocolate, and a slight hint of lime on the back end.

Flavor Profile: This coffee entered at the center of the mouth with a full-bodied lushness that hit the tip of the tongue with tart red berry before moving to the mid-tongue. The fruit-forward note was accompanied by flavors of almond and cashew. Mid-palate, we tasted a powerful note of chocolate with blood orange flowing underneath. Rounded dark chocolate and cocoa powder are found on the back of the tongue, while the sides of the the tongue picked up acidity reminiscent of a dry white wine. Complex aromatics persist of almond, floral, strawberry jam, lime, and blood orange.

Overall Impression (What did you think of it? Anything else we should know?): We found this coffee to be exceptional and vibrant, with complex flavors churning throughout the tasting experience. This is a coffee that will hit the spot for almost all moods, whether you're looking for fruit, chocolate, flowers, or acidity. We're excited to try this one on our Aeropress next to see if it takes the flavors up another notch, and we recommend trying this coffee if you can while it is available; it stands up on its own and does not require a pairing, although we would advise against a sugary pairing if you opt to do so. Final Score (1-10, with 10 being the best cup of coffee in your life): 8.6. Where to Buy: Sunergos Coffee
