Review #44: Detour Coffee Roasters
Name of Roaster: Detour Coffee Roasters Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Burlington, ON, CAN
Name of Roast: Santa Lucia Costa Rica Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Medium
Origin of Beans: Naranjo, West Valley, Costa Rica Price: $18 CAD ($14.15 USD) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): Chemex Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): 28 days Aroma: Opening the bag, we were hit with dark chocolate, nutmeg, hazelnut, and a faint scent of raspberry jam. A similar palate presented itself after grinding, but slightly brighter, with an added note of thick brownie batter tacked on to the end. On the pour, prominent scents included light honey, light brown sugar, and toffee.
Flavor Profile: The coffee had a high entry that started at the roof of the mouth and took up residence at about halfway in on the tongue. Beautiful aromatics of dark chocolate and orange marmalade fill the mouth, while a raspberry undercurrent follows. The coffee had a medium body with minimal acidity and a luxurious mouthfeel. The tip of the tongue catches a mixture of orange on top and berry below. The sides of the mouth cabin the coffee in by initially highlighting cocoa nibs before placing the acidity. Orange aromatics persist after the sip. Overall Impression (What did you think of it? Anything else we should know?): This coffee was a lovely, complex Costa Rica that contained diverse flavors that melded into a balanced cup. The coffee can stand on its own, although we are certain it would perform well when paired with a breakfast pastry. If you're a bloom fan, we note that there was a small rise on the bloom, but this was expected due to the time lag from roast date to the date of our sampling. That stated, we have been very impressed with Detour's coffees and would recommend them to anyone in Canada or elsewhere. This is a delicious cup.
