Review #57: Koffi

Name of Roaster: Koffi Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Palm Springs, CA

Name of Roast: Organic Sumatra Adsenia Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Light Origin of Beans: Indonesia Price: $13.95 (16 oz.) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): Chemex Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): Thirty Days Aroma: Chocolate cocoa, graham, chocolate chip cookie, devil's food cake, and a slight raspberry greet the nose when opening the bag. The grind provides floral notes that combine with black peppercorn and dark chocolate cake, followed by sour cherry and savory herbal notes. On the pour, white cane sugar, buttercream frosting, light caramel, and light brown sugar are found.

Flavor Profile: The coffee had a high entry that slowly made its way back across the roof of the mouth while a syrupy undercurrent flowed down the center of the tongue. The first sip of the coffee showed a light body with slightly floral aromatics, followed by flavors of oolong tea. The sides of the tongue pick up notes of wood, earth, and a hint of rounded orange. The finish is dry, astringent, and slightly bitter, reminiscent of jasmine tea. As the coffee cools, its flavors settle, with spiced chocolate coming forward and the tea-like attributes fading into the profile.

Overall Impression (What did you think of it? Anything else we should know?): This was a jarring switch from having just reviewed the dark Joshua Tree Coffee Company offering, but we warmed up to this coffee fairly quickly. The tea-like qualities were subtle as compared to other, more forceful roasts we have tasted, and the coffee paired well with chocolate, granola, and salumi, showing this to be a coffee that plays well with others. We recommend pairing rather than drinking this one on its own if you are not a fan of tea. The coffee was not as robust in its flavors as we would expect, which likely is partially due to the amount of time elapsed between purchase and brewing. That stated, it was a pleasant cup, and we'd recommend trying this or one of the many other coffees on offer at Koffi to anyone who finds themselves in Palm Springs, CA. Final Score (1-10, with 10 being the best cup of coffee in your life): 7.6 Where to Buy: Koffi Looking to do a review of your own? Hop over to the Community and get to it!
