Review #93: Rock Solid Coffee Company
Name of Roaster: Rock Solid Coffee Company
Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Buffalo, Minnesota
Name of Roast: Papua New Guinea Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Light/Medium Origin of Beans: Papua New Guinea Price: $7.99 (10 oz.) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): Chemex Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): Ten Days Aroma: Tearing open the bag, we noted cocoa mix, chocolate brownie crust, brownie batter, and a slight blackberry. After grinding, baking spices show, followed by an undercurrent of graham and sharp, medium-dark chocolate. Rich cane sugar, dark brown sugar, caramel, and a slight roast note are found on the pour.
Flavor Profile: The coffee arrives with a medium body entry that is low on the palate, coating the front of the tongue before rising to the front of the roof. The coffee is initially viscous and syrupy, with notes of toffee, cream, dark chocolate, and pecan on the center of the tongue. The tip of the tongue catches creamsicle, raspberry, and sour cherry, while the sides of the tongue get soft orange and lime that melds into the sip. As it cools, the coffee develops a lighter body, and the aforementioned fruit takes more precedence as compared to the nutty and chocolate notes. On the finish, one finds a clean taste of dry brownie cake.
Overall Impression (What did you think of it? Anything else we should know?): We admit that we were not expecting this coffee to be as good as it was, given the fact that it was only $8, it had a vague geographical description, and we found it in a rural grocery store in Northwest Wisconsin. Once again, we were overjoyed to find a wonderful cup of coffee that exceeded our expectations. We found this to be a great anytime sipper that we can pair across the board, and it is well worth the purchase if you're in the neighborhood and seeking a step way above the usual north woods brew.
