Review #148: Café Campesino

Name of Roaster: Café Campesino

Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Americus, GA

Name of Roast: Richland Rum Roast

Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Medium Origin of Beans: N/A Price: $18 (12 oz.) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): Drip Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): Thirty-one days Aroma: Cutting open the bag, we noted baked brownie, molasses, vanilla, spiced rum, dry baked chocolate cake, and a touch of oak. On the grind, the rounded rum notes become more pronounced, and underneath one finds almond, cocoa nib, and saltine cracker. Dark rum, caramelizing white sugar, and almond appeared on the pour.

Flavor Profile: With a mid-palate entry, light-to-medium bodied, and with good weight, this washed across the tongue from front to back in a straight shot, with aromatics of rum and roast persisting. Flavors of dark and light rum, oak, vanilla, nougat, cocoa nib, almond, and toasted walnut show, while the sides of the tongue receive lemon, and the tip of the tongue catches muddled orange.

Overall Impression (What did you think of it?): This is one of the better "alcohol-flavored" coffees we have ever tested, with a balance that allows the coffee to show as the primary component, as compared to the other way around. This is a coffee that can be sipped on its own, but we found it paired best with a glazed donut. We recommend this to rum fans and those passing through the Richland Rum distillery. Final Score (1-10, with 10 being the best cup of coffee in your life): 7.5 Where to Buy: Richland Rum
