Review #70: Greenberry's Coffee Co.

Name of Roaster: Greenberry's Coffee Co. Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Charlottesville, VA Name of Roast: Fair Trade Certified Sumatra Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Dark

Origin of Beans: Sumatra Price: $12 (12 oz) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): Chemex Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): Twenty-Eight Days Aroma: Opening the bag, the initial notes are dark chocolate syrup, a slight roast note, and devil's food cake. The grind offers more of the chocolate cake, but with a touch of sugar. The pour, in turn, showed dark brown sugar and caramelizing cane sugar, with a lingering roast note on the finish. Flavor Profile: The coffee is medium-bodied and had a low entry on the palate. The initial flavor was slightly metallic, following by a dominating roast note. The coffee's profile moved slowly from the front of the tongue to the back, while aromatics hit the dead center of the roof of the mouth and remain. As the coffee cools, more notes develop: herbaceous flavors of cedar, pine, and wet stone appear, while the sides of the tongue pick up a sharp lime and hickory. The finish is a mix of the roast note and the aforementioned herbaceous flavors. Overall Impression (What did you think of it? Anything else we should know?): This is a coffee for those who are used to a Starbucks dark roast. Best mixed with cream to temper the flavors, we tried this with both savory and sweet food items, and we recommend it with a savory item (we chose charcuterie) if you plan to drink this coffee; it is not a coffee you can sit down with an have a few cups of by its lonesome. We were hoping for a more developed profile when we purchased this bag, but upon opening we discovered this was a dark roast that had a lot of oil. As a reminder, be careful when purchasing a bag that does not state the type of roast (light/medium/dark)! Final Score (1-10, with 10 being the best cup of coffee in your life): 6.5 Where to Buy: Greenberry's Coffee Co. Looking to do a review of your own? Hop over to the Community and get to it!
