Review #128: Heart Coffee Roasters

Name of Roaster: Heart Coffee Roasters

Location of Roaster (City, State, Country): Portland, Oregon

Name of Roast: Guatemala El Moreno Pacamara

Type of Roast (Light, Medium, Dark): Medium Origin of Beans: Huehuetenango, Guatemala

Price: $20 (12 oz.) Brewing Method (Drip, Chemex, AeroPress, etc.): AeroPress Time Between Purchase and Brewing (Ballpark is fine): Eighty-one Days Aroma: Cutting open the bag, scents of rich chocolate cocoa, milk chocolate with crisped rice, ripe cherry and raspberry, fruit punch, and crisp bread crust appeared. After the grind, the aroma was similar, but muted, with notes of baking spice showing through the aforementioned scents, and the fruit notes turned jammy. Wet stone, dark brown sugar, refined cane sugar, and a touch of nougat were found on the pour.

Flavor Profile: The coffee had a mid-palate entry that hit the roof and tip of the tongue simultaneously before stopping midway down the tongue. Showing a light body, the coffee is bright, acidic, and fruit forward, with tons of lively juice enveloping the palate. Notes of bright apple, mango, kiwi, tangerine, lemon, lime, and guava swirl across the tongue. The tip of the tongue catches orange, while the back of the tongue receives a deeper chocolate and vanilla note to balance out the sip. The sides of the tongue catch lime, creamsicle, and ripe tomato. As it cools, caramel and chocolate begin to show, blanketing the tongue after the wash of fruit.

Overall Impression (What did you think of it? Anything else we should know?): We found this coffee to be lovely, if a bit intense with an AeroPress. We’d recommend it in a Chemex or pour over setup so as to reduce the acidity slightly. The coffee worked well with milk, and it paired well with olive oil cake and creme fraiche. We have reviewed Heart's coffees a few times, and we always find their efforts to be stellar. This roast is no exception.

Final Score (1-10, with 10 being the best cup of coffee in your life): 8.5. Where to Buy: Heart Coffee Roasters
